'Julia's Cats' Is the Perfect Gift for Cat Ladies Who Love to Cook

Julia Child was a woman with many passions. You may already be familiar with two of her greatest loves—her relationships with French cooking and her husband, Paul, have been well-documented in numerous biographies and films, most notably Julie & Julia. But, strangely, her beloved feline companions have often been left out of the narrative.

was published in 2012, but only recently made its way onto my bookshelf. Through personal letters and photos, authors Patricia Barey and Therese Burson tell the absolutely lovely story of how Julia Child became a bona fide cat lady.

Paul once said that “a cat—any cat—is necessary” to Julia’s happiness. That may have been true, but it’s clear that one Parisian cat held a special place in the French Chef’s heart. Minette Mimosa McWilliams Child, a tricolor stray, entered Julia’s life in 1948 as an antidote to a pesky mouse problem.

While she showed definite promise as a rodent patrolwoman, she was quickly promoted to full-time family member. Julia once said that upon Minette’s arrival her “domestic circle was completed.”

Minette sparked a love for “poussiequettes” that would endure throughout Julia’s life.

Julia’s Cats is a must-read for any cat lover, home cook, or Julia Child fan.
