It happened, This Is Us fans. Are we all still here? I personally am here in body but not so much in spirit, because my spirit absconded right around the 40-minute mark of tonight's episode, when Jack Pearson - steadfast, sweet, too-pure-for-this-world Jack Pearson - died of a heart attack, caused by smoke inhalation, caused by saving his family from a devastating house fire.

Rebecca is so disbelieving when the doctor delivers this news that she almost laughs in his face - after all, they've only come to the hospital for a burn on Jack's arm. "Are you out of your mind?" she asks him, striding into Jack's room to confirm that there's been a mistake. And then she sees Jack's body (we see only the reflection in a glass window) and the camera holds on Rebecca's face as she gradually breaks into tears. It's gut-wrenching, and not in any of the ways I quite expected from this episode.

The build-up to this long-awaited moment of horror started a week and a half ago in the season's thirteenth episode, "That'll Be the Day," in which we learned that the house fire was started by a faulty Crock-Pot, that Kevin was the only Pearson not home when the fire began, and that Kate's dog Louie maybe had something to do with Jack's death. Which, as it turns out, he did - Jack suffered such severe smoke inhalation because he went back into the house to save Louie, which is why Kate still feels responsible to this day.

I'm not doing well.
