It's Happening! Amazon Lands ‘Lord of the Rings’ Multi-Season TV Show Deal

Remember those rumors about a potential Lord of the Rings TV show? Yeah, it’s really happening.

Amazon just announced it has landed the rights to a multi-season television adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic fantasy franchise, Lord of the Rings, with a possible spin-off series to follow. The new show will be available to stream on Amazon Prime and will take place prior to the first LOTR novel, The Fellowship of the Ring, which introduced Frodo to the powerful ring and recounted his journey to the fires of Mount Doom to destroy it.

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its long-standing commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings. Sharon [Tal Yguado, head of scripted series] and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust.

No further details on the new series have been released.

Welcome back, Frodo.
