After eight years on the air, Blue Bloods has become famous for revealing its most shocking plot lines at the beginning and end of each season.

In last year's premiere, beloved character Linda Reagan (Amy Carlson) was killed in a helicopter crash, devastating fans right from the get-go. Twenty-one episodes later, the finale was filled with even more emotional moments: one of Erin Reagan's (Bridget Moynahan) colleagues died in her arms, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) finally broke down about Linda's death, and Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) and Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray) got engaged.

Of course, these big changes cannot come without consequences for the characters. Actor Will Estes recently opened up about what Jamie's engagement will mean for him, his fiancée, and the rest of the Reagan family in season 9.

"It creates a huge problem, because what ends up happening is our characters don’t want anything to change," Estes exclusively tells CountryLiving.com. But Jamie's father, Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck), doesn't see things his way.

"They don’t put two cops who are romantic partners in the same car together," Estes explains.

After the couple announced their engagement at the weekly Reagan family dinner, Frank told Eddie that she could move to whichever precinct she wanted. Frank's son and future daughter-in-law pointed out that there's nothing written in the books that says two romantic partners cannot be partners on the force. This was a surprise to the Police Commissioner, as no commanding officer in his memory had ever allowed it before.

"In terms of Eddie and Jamie, [they] don't want to stop riding in the same car together," Estes says. "So that becomes a point of conflict [between Jamie and Frank]."

In classic Blue Bloods form, we may see the consequences of the couple's personal and professional relationship come to light in the season premiere. A trailer for the episode shows Eddie inside a residence engulfed in flames. "I'm right behind you," she screams, presumably to her partner and fiancé. But then, a fireball bursts through a window and Jamie is shown outside the burning building as he yells "Eddie!"

Maybe Frank was right, after all.

Blue Bloods season 9 premieres at 10 p.m. EST on Friday, September 28.
