As we wait anxiously to find out whether 13 Reasons Why is officially getting a season two or not, fans are understandably theorizing like crazy to pass the time. This latest theory concerns Tony (Christian Navarro), the endlessly patient, impeccably-gelled car enthusiast who guides Clay (Dylan Minnette) through his weird tape experience.

When I started the show, I was pretty sure Tony was a ghost. He was just always conveniently there, ready to offer Clay some sage-yet-ambiguous wisdom whenever he needed it, and seemed to have very little going on in his own life. But then Tony's boyfriend showed up, and Tony began interacting even more with other characters – as any theory-hound knows, only interacting with one character is the ultimate tell-tale sign that you've got a ghost on your hands.

But here's a different spin on Tony, as highlighted by E! Online: what if he's a guardian angel? Sure, there's the obvious fact that he acts as a mystical guide to Clay, and in dispensing the tapes he allows Hannah to communicate from beyond the grave. But Refinery29 has the best explanation for this theory I've seen anywhere: Tony has to be the ghost of a student who died back in the 1950s, because there is no other explanation for his "Happy Days cosplay" wardrobe.

Also, the show ends with Tony, Clay, Skye and Tony's boyfriend Brad driving off into the sunset... and Tony is driving the car. Which, if you go with the guardian angel theory, kind of makes it seem like they're all dead. But they are not. OR ARE THEY?
