A$AP Rocky, Iggy Pop, and Tyler, the Creator Throw a Gucci Spaghetti Party

If you’ve been wondering what Iggy Pop, Tyler the Creator, or A$AP Rocky have been doing during quarantine, we finally have an answer: having a spaghetti party in Hollywood with Harmony Korine.

At least that’s the story suggested by Gucci’s new tailoring campaign, debuting here exclusively. Gucci, of course, is best known for kickstarting fashion’s recent gender-fluid revolution, marrying a feminine sensibility to its brainy, retro menswear. But Alessandro Michele’s tailoring lately has taken on a spiffy new flavor: it’s still Gucci, with wild logos and big colors, but it’s also become kind of beefy, natty, and even wacky, with sweater vests and double-breasted suits in shapes from the ’50s and ’60s that happen to go perfectly with giant loafers. (It’s no wonder gorpcore kingpin Shia LaBeouf has been so into it!)

Spring Breakers and The Beach Bum director Korine—his eye, as ever, brash and mischievous—captures the shift perfectly. In both photos and a film (below), shot in February, Iggy Pop serves as the proverbial lord of a midcentury modern manor in Los Angeles, where he’s impatiently lounging with his parrot, Biggy Pop. (Korine is a repeat collaborator of Michele’s, shooting past lookbooks and releasing a limited edition book with the house. The parrot, presumably, is a repeat collaborator of Iggy’s.) A few moments later, Rocky and Tyler pull up in a vintage bronze Rolls Royce. The three greet each other ecstatically (in slo-mo, thank god), then boogie through Iggy’s house, trying on various suits and causing light, sensitive chaos. Tyler wears a sweater vest, Rocky wears the perfect fall overcoat, and everyone gets a few minutes with one of the parrots. In one image, Iggy serves heaping plates of spaghetti and red sauce. Good man! As a press release states, “their shared love of panache creates common ground.”

As recent months have shown us, suits and the domestic sphere are perhaps unfamiliar companions. But here, tailored clothes look right at home. Michele is one of the originators of a sensibility that suggests leaving the house is but a small part of getting dressed. Iggy even appears in a crisp grey suit with a ribbed turtleneck underneath. The shirtless god in a turtleneck? There is indeed nothing normal about these times! As Michele says, “Perhaps elegance is something in the air that sometimes you are not even ready for. Male elegance can be unpredictable and strange.”
