From Town & Country

There's a reason why chess is having a moment: The Queen's Gambit, Netflix's stylish limited series about a chess prodigy, is the show on everyone's lips. And now, two of the series' key players—lead actress Anya Taylor-Joy and co-creator Scott Frank—are set to reunite for an exciting new project, based on Vladimir Nabokov's Laughter in the Dark. Here's what we know so far.

It stars Anya Taylor-Joy.

Taylor-Joy, best known for her roles in Emma. and her series with Frank, The Queen's Gambit, is reportedly attached to star. Further casting details have yet to be announced.

It's based on Nabokov's Laughter in the Dark.

The author's 1932 novel, set in Berlin's 1930s film scene, centers on middle-aged art critic Albert Albinus, who becomes entranced with 17-year-old aspiring actress Margot Peters. After Albinus's wife learns of the affair and leaves him, Peters enlists her ex Axel Rex to help ruin Albinus, both financially and mentally.

Frank already has a concept for the adaptation.

Speaking to the Ringer’s "The Watch" podcast, Frank described the project as "a valentine to movies," adding, "I’m going to do it as a film noir and a movie within a movie. And it’s a really nasty, wonderful, thriller."

It's still early days.

No firm timeline for production or release has been announced, so it'll likely be awhile before this project debuts. Town & Country will update this article as news surfaces about the adaptation—and in the meantime, The Queen's Gambit is always available for a rewatch.
