The weather is warming up, it’s festival season, and summer vacations are on the horizon. Typically, our beauty and style would reflect the changing seasons wearing a host of bright colors and shades—but not Anya Taylor-Joy. The actor is sticking with her moody aesthetic, and the proof is in her manicure. The Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star is bringing back an edgy nail trend from fall and just might convince us of its evergreen appeal.

On April 16, the actress was seen leaving her hotel in New York City wearing a casual look featuring high-waisted jeans, a white tank top, a leather jacket, and black Maison Margiela Tabi shoes. Although her ensemble wasn’t the most groundbreaking, her nails were worth a second look. Taylor-Joy's plain black nails were glazed with a glossy finish to create a faux patent leather look for what we’ve coined as “Patent leather nails.

The Patent Leather Nail Trend

As a refresher, patent leather nails look exactly how they sound: black color with an ultra-glossy finish. They’re the perfect minimalist manicure for when you want to go elevated and edgy. Because of its simplicity, this manicure is easygoing enough to wear with most outfits and provides just a touch of visual interest, which explains why Taylor-Joy wears these year round.

Just last week, the Dune star attended CinemaCon Las Vegas donning a long “Burnt” French manicure, so it’s interesting to see her look change so soon. Perhaps it speaks to the effectiveness of a simple black nail—Taylor-Joy opted to paint on her natural nails, which we’d wager is more comfortable for every day than a long square manicure. She also wore the patent leather nails to the Dior Pre-Fall 2024 show in New York paired with a chic all-black outfit from the brand, proving that sometimes, less is more when it comes to your nails.

How to Get the Look

The patent leather nail look is super easy to get at home. All that it requires is shaping your nails down to a shorter length, painting with a dark-hued polish, and topping it with a glossy finish. While black nails might not be your summer go-to, Taylor-Joy’s manicure is evidence that the style is timeless, even for the warmer months.
