At Harper’s Bazaar, we’re constantly asking: What exactly makes a good outfit a good outfit? In our column Why This Outfit Works, an editor dissects the anatomy of a look, zeroing in on the one specific piece or pieces that pull the entire ensemble together.

Thanks to the likes of Zendaya and Margot Robbie, Hollywood has learned a valuable lesson over the past year: the best way to get people interested in your movie is to first get them interested in your clothes.

Anya Taylor-Joy is now the latest star to take up the torch of method dressing. As we approach the theatrical release of her new film Furiosa, the prequel to the post-apocalyptic film franchise Mad Max, the Emmy winner has delivered a round of looks worthy of the Wasteland. (See: a metal Balmain dress, a vintage Paco Rabanne slip covered in arrows, and a blood-red leather Rick Owens gown.) But, if Taylor-Joy is anything, she's a fashion chameleon—and she reminded us of that sartorial superpower when she touched down in the south of France yesterday for the Cannes Film Festival.

Adieu dystopian wardrobe! At least for now, the 28-year-old actor has embraced French Riviera style with a slate of street style appearances outside of her Cannes hotel. Yesterday, she swapped arrows for sunshine by wearing a scene-stealing sun hat—specifically, Jacquemus's Le Chapeau Bomba.

Made of woven straw, the piece is magnificently—bordering on nonsensically—massive. Its brim, which includes one side turned up, is so wide that it arcs over Taylor-Joy's entire frame, shading the rest of her silhouette. It's the kind of piece that leans into the absurd joy of dressing up, and it's exactly why her outfit works.

Sun hats are for glamour too, as Taylor-Joy proves so effortlessly with the rest of her look. Rather than pairing Le Chapeau Bomba with a simple sun dress or a poolside swimsuit (as the accessory was styled in the fashion house's summer campaign), she decided on a lustrous pleated one-shoulder gown in a russet orange color from Altein, finished off with strappy light brown Jimmy Choos. Oo la la!
