There is no such thing as boundaries in Antonio Marras’ ebullient imagination, let alone geographical borders. For pre-fall 2024, the Sardinian designer explored the affinities between his beloved homeland (his never-ending source of inspiration) and his compatriots with Native Americans.

Too far of a stretch? He shooed away such a thought with a simple gesture: he stood in front of his mood board plastered with vintage images of women from both communities, all bedecked in their traditional clothes, and covered their faces with a hand. Similarities in their styles spoke louder than words.

Called to further elaborate on the concept, Marras listed the shared respect for tradition, love of craftsmanship, safeguarding of diversity and, above all, the centrality of the relationship with nature in both cultures.

These aspects informed his pretty collection. The designer’s knack for textural juxtaposition, crafty embellishments, bucolic inspirations and signature blend of masculine and feminine tropes shone with the mix of florals and tartan fabrics in tailoring, handsome jacquard knits, beautifully embroidered coats and roomy damask trench coats pleated on the back.

Marras’ vocabulary was also expanded, the most appealing of which were leather frocks and separates with a lived-in feeling. These ranged from long dresses to layer over crisp shirts with extra pointed collars to a series of covetable bomber jackets in ‘80s-nodding oversize proportions, including a cropped variation with zippers and long fringes on the back.

Anchoring the lineup were three standout blankets that displayed Marras’ prowess in the art of patchwork while addressing both Sardinians’ and Native Americans’ focus on “a type of clothing that is easily transportable, that protects against seasonal weather changes, and that uses raw materials accessible to a perpetually displaced people,” as read the press notes.

The beauty of natural landscapes not only inspired embellishments in the collection but also its color palette, encompassing sky blue, navy, rust, taupe, dove gray, ecru and chestnut hues that amplified the charm of the lineup.
