NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown just requested that he be released from his contract with the Oakland Raiders in a pretty unconventional way: by @ing the team an Instagram post, alongside an image containing the quote "You are gonna piss a lot of people off when you start doing what’s best for you."

"And that’s fine!" Brown wrote in the caption. "I have worked my whole life to prove that the system is blind to see talent like mines [sic]. Now that everyone sees it, they want me to conform to that same system that has failed me all those years. “I’m not mad at anyone. I’m just asking for the freedom to prove them all wrong.” Release me @raiders #NOMore #theyputblindersonahorseforareason #NoMoreFake"

Brown has been largely absent from training with the Raiders ahead of the new season while he recovers from severe frostbite injuries on his feet, the result of wearing incorrect footwear in a cryotherapy chamber.

At the same time, he has been involved in a lengthy dispute with the Raiders regarding his helmet, even threatening to quit the game for good unless they allowed him to wear his old helmet, despite the fact that it was outlawed by the NFL for safety reasons. Quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers were among other NFL stars who would be required to give up their preferred helmets, but Brown was reportedly angry that he was being forced to select a new model from the options he was being sent. And while that conflict seemed to have been resolved, it looks like Brown is still angry enough to be demanding that the team let him go.
