Anton Yelchin's parents just settled a major lawsuit over his death, and we hope this helps bring them closure

The parents of Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin have finally settled a lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler involving their son’s accidental death. In June 2016, Yelchin’s Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Fiat brand, rolled downhill near his L.A. home, pinning him against a concrete mailbox. His parents filed a lawsuit against the company in August of that same year, stating that the gear changer was faulty.

In April 2016, Fiat recalled 1.1 million of their vehicles worldwide due to similar concerns. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration later confirmed the problem was related to the design of the automatic transmission gear shift. Fiat released a statement saying, “We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to the Yelchin family for their tragic loss.” The company also noted that they were happy to have finally reached an amicable resolution but that details would remain confidential.

Yelchin appeared in over 50 films over the course of his 27 years. The Russian-born actor is best known for playing Pavel Chekov in three Star Trek films, but he also appeared in Terminator Salvation, as well as a number of critically acclaimed independent films.

The specific amount of the settlement has not yet been disclosed, but it will go towards funding a documentary about Yelchin’s life. Yelchin’s parents founded the Anton Yelchin foundation in 2017 in memory of their son, who was also born with cystic fibrosis, and part of the settlement will also go towards that. The foundation assists young people in the arts facing challenges in their career due to illness or disability.
