America's Next Top Model winner Lisa D'Amato — who competed in Season 5 before taking the crown in Season 17's all-stars competition — spoke out ahead of the show's 20th anniversary and urged fellow contestants to share their side of the story.
"Plz plz be honest with yourself and everyone else when I say DON'T BE SCARED to truly tell how horrible it was in your interview," she said in a post on her private IG account (via Entertainment Weekly.)
"Don't act tough. Be real. Don't be scared of the fandom. Don't be scared of Tyra or Ken Mok," continued Lisa. "The light is coming through and more and more the fandom are on our side."
"Speak up and speak freely," Lisa urged. "Remember this is your life to [sic]! Fight for it! Do you know who is going to stand up for you if you don't? Do you know who is going to save your life if you don't?"
Lisa also compared the experience on the show to the controversial Stanford Prison Experiment where participants took on the roles of guards and prisoners, and as the experiment went on, the mistreatment of the prisoners escalated.
As more ANTM contestants have spoken up about how they’ve been treated over the years, the show’s ethics have gone under public reconsideration.
Alleged examples of mistreatment include Season 12's second runner-up Aminat Ayinde, who accused the show of "psychological warfare," when they forced her to use a hair product that she was allergic to and left her with a bald spot. According to Aminat, she believes host Tyra Banks, "doesn't give a fuck" and that she had "lost all respect" for her after her run on the show.
Season 7's third-place winner, Eugena Washington, also shared that she had to walk a makeshift runway made up of a narrow plank of wood over a pool in six-inch heels. “I felt like my life was being put on the line for ratings,” she told Business Insider last year, calling the challenge an “impossible task” and “dangerous.”
"You’re not looking at lifting women up. You’re not looking at giving them a real opportunity," a former production employee alleged, "You’re looking at trying to pit them against each other in a barrel full of crabs that are all trying to claw their way out."
