Home Away From Home is a series that spotlights BIPOC brands and collaborations that are adding a cultural essence to everyday items. This allows anyone to always have a piece of their culture in their own space without ever feeling homesick or out of touch with their roots. We're exploring the stories of the individuals behind the brands that have touched people's hearts through their products and have allowed people to feel at home anywhere.

In honor of International Women's Day, Anthropologie has launched an exclusive collection that celebrates self-love and womanhood. The brand collaborated with Kemi Telford, a bold fashion brand making waves through its vivid and empowering patterns.  If you're looking for vibrant and unique homeware pieces from throw pillows to blankets, this collection is for you.

All the bright and unique designs were thoughtfully curated by the designer, Yvonne Modupe Telford, who drew inspiration from her rich Nigerian culture and childhood memories. As you're shopping, expect to see dazzling florals and radiant hues.

Could You Tell Us a Little About Yourself?

Yvonne Modupe Telford: My name is Yvonne Modupe Telford, and I am the founder of Kemi Telford. Originally from Kano, Nigeria, I moved to England in 1996 to pursue law studies. After completing my studies, I worked as a credit risk analyst at a pharmaceutical company. I'm also a proud mother to two wonderful girls and happily married. We reside in South London.

How Did You End Up Collaborating With Anthropologie for This Collection?

YMT: The inception of Kemi Telford wasn't a calculated business move but rather a response to a simple yet frequent question on Instagram: "Where did you get that outfit?" Inspired by my mother's thriving business in Sabon-Gari, Kano, I harbored a childhood dream of designing and offering stunning clothing to women, a dream realized through the power of the internet.

When Anthropologie approached me to design homeware pieces, I was deeply humbled and excited about venturing into uncharted territory. The project was exhilarating and challenging, leading to a thoroughly enjoyable collaborative process.

What Was the Process Like of Choosing Fabrics, Patterns, and Colors?

YMT: Every aspect of the collection—colors, prints, and patterns—draws inspiration from my childhood in Kano, Nigeria. I felt an immediate connection with Anthropologie and knew precisely how to infuse that signature Kemi Telford flair.

The floral prints pay homage to the abundant Hibiscus flowers of my childhood, which surrounded me until my relocation to England. They serve as a heartfelt tribute to the beauty of those cherished memories.

The movement prints, featuring semi-circles, was inspired by the exquisite coral beads my mother adorned during traditional occasions. These designs aim to capture the elegance and melodic charm of the beads as they gracefully adorned her neck.

What Product From the Collection Is Special to You?

YMT: Each product is special in my heart, like asking a parent to pick a favorite child; however, I love how radiant and detailed the throw blankets are. They exude a vibrancy that adds a fun appeal to your home for spring and summer.

What Kind of Message Do You Want the Products to Convey When They’re in People’s Homes?

YMT: The products aim to convey a message of love, beauty, and fabulousness. Each item was crafted with love, weaving a narrative of childhood memories. They exude undeniable beauty and bring a chic touch to every home.

Did You Draw Any Inspiration From Your Own Clothing Brand to Bring the Anthropologie Collaboration to Life?

YMT: Absolutely. The Anthropologie collaboration is an extension of the Kemi Telford brand. You'll unmistakably encounter the signature Kemi Telford aesthetic upon exploring the collection.
