Netflix’s newest docuseries, I Just Killed My Dad, tells the harrowing true-crime story of a teen who kills his father. And viewers are left with a whole lot of questions.

In case you need a brief summary, the three-part docuseries details the events that led up to the fatal shooting incident that left Anthony's father dead, as well as the aftermath in court. In the doc, Anthony talks to the filmmakers about his experience, and viewers learn that he was represented in court by defense lawyer Jarrett Ambeau.

Ambeau has since spoken publicly about the experience and even provided updates on Anthony's life.

But who is Jarrett Ambeau again, and where is he now? Here’s what you need to know.

Who is Jarrett Ambeau?

Ambeau was the criminal defense lawyer for Anthony Templet, a 17-year-old boy who shot and killed his father, Burt Templet, in Louisiana in 2019, during his court proceedings.

Ambeau has his own firm, Ambeau Law, which serves clients in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area. His firm handles cases in forensic DNA litigation, federal crimes, sex crimes, and DWIs.

Ambeau was born and raised in Louisiana and has six children, ranging from ages six to 30, according to his bio. He also is a court-qualified expert in forensic DNA interpretation.

The case was a tricky one because Anthony had confessed to the murder while on the phone with a 911 operator in the aftermath of the shooting, according to local news station WAFB9. Burt died of his injuries days later.

On the 911 call, Anthony told the police that his father "tried to attack me" after an argument, and "then, we got into a fist fight. Then, I ran in his room, closed the door, and got a gun,” according to the documentary. “As I unlocked the door, he tried to…and then I shot him. I just killed my dad. I shot him three times.”

Court proceedings also suggested Burt had a history of abuse.

What has he said about Anthony and the Templet case?

Ambeau has spoken out on social media about the case and even about Anthony.

“The only facts the DA has are those given by Anthony in this interview,” he said in one tweet. “Watch this and listen closely to Anthony's statement and that of the prosecutors. This is how criminal cases are over-charged and why it is difficult to find justice in the justice system.”

Anthony was initially charged with second-degree murder. But this was reduced to a manslaughter charge, according to the documentary. And in 2021, Jarrett reached a deal with East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore and Assistant DA Dana Cummings that resulted in zero jail time for Anthony, per USA Today.

"When I saw this injustice, I said, ‘Absolutely, no way should this kid be in jail,” Ambeau told the local news station, WAFB9, after the verdict. “It may not be the thing we have hoped but this is an imperfect system. We try to find the best possible justice and I think we got that today.”

Recently, Ambeau revealed that he and his family watched the documentary with Anthony, and shared some of the now-20-year-old's life updates.

“Anthony is doing great. Living a peaceful life. He's working full time, finishing his GED, being exemplary in his duty to the court and probation, and doing regular counseling when he can manage the time and resources,” Ambeau wrote.

What is negligent homicide?

This word comes up several times in the film because Anthony pleaded no contest to negligent homicide and was given a sentence of five years of supervised probation with credit for time already served, per WAFB9.

Negligent homicide occurs when the killing of another person results from negligence or if the action was not intended to kill the other person, according to UsLegal.com. (These tend to include situations like fatal car accidents.)

Where is Jarrett Ambeau now?

Ambeau is still working for his law firm and he’s also trying to raise money to help Anthony.

“I've also included the GoFundMe we set up for him,” Jarrett captioned a few photos of himself and his family with Anthony. “All funds will go directly to Anthony only—to purchase a car, pay for his continued education and counseling, and pay his financial obligations. Thank you all for your love and care and generosity.”
