The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Anthony Mackie has revealed that he really didn't want to be the next Captain America. The actor admitted he "hated the idea" of his character Sam Wilson taking the shield, but it seems like things have worked out quite well after all.

Talking at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation panel alongside castmates Sebastian Stan, Carl Lumbly, Emily VanCamp and Wyatt Russell, Mackie revealed that it wasn't clear what was going to happen with his character following the events of Avengers: Endgame and he wasn't initially sold on the idea of the Marvel spin-off TV series either.

"We never talked about [Sam Wilson taking the shield] when the pitch of the show came about it. It was more so about the continuation about what was gonna happen with the shield, if it was gonna be Bucky or if it was gonna be Sam," Mackie said.

"Because at the end of Endgame, Sam didn't accept the shield. He told Steve, 'It feels like this is someone else's, it feels like it's yours.' So at no point in time was he excited or looking forward to the idea of becoming Captain America."

He explained: "So it was more so Kevin [Feige] and Nate [Moore] telling me, 'We're not sure what's happening, so the show will be more about the idea or the archetype of Captain America, not you becoming Captain America.'

"So I was really confused leaving out of the meeting. But I wasn't excited either. I hated the idea. I thought it was gonna be an awful idea," he added. Of course, by the end of the series, Sam Wilson did finally take up the mantle of Captain America and a fourth Captain America movie is now in the works, so we might get to see Sam's Cap in action on the big screen soon too.
