A New Anthony Bourdain Doc Promises a Behind-the-Scenes Look at His Off-Camera Life

As we begin to travel and explore again this summer after a year in lockdown, a new documentary will pay tribute to the renowned world traveller and culture maven Anthony Bourdain. The first trailer for Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain, which hits theaters on July 16, is here. The new documentary from Morgan Neville, the award-winning filmmaker behind Fred Rogers doc Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, promises an intimate look at the late chef—his relationships, his travels, and his struggles throughout his life as a beloved cultural icon.

In 2000, the success of his memoir and inside look at the restaurant world Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly turned Bourdain into a world-renowned food writer and television personality. For the nearly two decades following, Bourdain hosted acclaimed and cherished shows including the Travel Channel’s No Reservations and CNN’s Parts Unknown, where he showcased food and culture from every corner of the world.

In 2018, Bourdain died of suicide while filming Parts Unknown in France, at the age of 61. The first trailer for Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain shows that the documentary will grapple with the challenges Bourdain faced as he boldly trotted the globe. A comprehensive, unshrinking look at his life filled with archival footage, Roadrunner promises to show us where Bourdain went, and what he left behind.

Following its summer theatrical release, Roadrunner will air on CNN and be available to stream on HBO Max.
