Since Christina and Ant Anstead announced their separation in September, neither of them have directly spoken to the press about the matter. Instead, the former husband and wife have shared their sides of the story over social media, while sources close to them have issued statements to the press. Now, Ant Anstead is finally ready to tell all. The 41-year-old sat down with People for its latest issue.

"It really hit me hard," the former Wheelers Dealers host told the outlet. "I had so much love for her," he said of the HGTV star, 37, whom he married in December 2018.

As he already hinted on Instagram, Ant confirmed that Christina was the one who had wanted to separate. “I have remained silent while holding on to hope. I never gave up on us. I pray Christina’s decision brings her happiness," he previously shared with fans after the news went public.

That being said, he revealed that he was in a "very dark place" following the one-sided split. Fortunately, however, he reached a turning point. "I had the choice to dwell on it, or move on and work on myself," he explained, noting he chose the latter.

The dad-of-three quickly found comfort through a five-week breakup recovery and healing course titled The Breakup Recovery Recipe, which he praised on Instagram back in October. Now, as he discussed it with People, he revealed some of his takeaways from the program: "nobody controls me but me," he shared. "It’s up to me to empower myself and realize how incredibly worthy I am of healing."

Besides taking the course, Ant also revealed that he made some changes to his daily routine. He starts off each day by FaceTiming his older kids (Amelie and Archie Anstead) in the U.K., then exercises, eats a healthy breakfast, and says a prayer about what he’s grateful for. He also spends time with his one-year-son Hudson, whom he shares with Christina.

"Not only have I improved my mental health, I've actually made a real conscious decision to go and improve my physical health," Ant said. "I mean, for the first time in my life, I'm actually now taking vitamins." He even noted that he feels more physically fit now than he did during his professional soccer career.

While the single dad has been taking great strides since the split, he revealed that he’s still hurting — although, not all days are as painful. "It really is a process," he said of navigating the grief. "And the thing about healing is sometimes you feel like you’re making daily progress, and then, from nowhere, your legs get taken out, and you feel like you start again. But I'm certainly making steps towards healing, even if it's really slow."
