Annual fishing derby set for Saturday in Marysville

May 15—The 72nd annual Jim Watson Youth Fishing Derby is set to take place this Saturday at Ellis Lake in Marysville.

Scheduled to start in the morning, this free event put on by the Kiwanis Club of Marysville is meant to provide a "perfect outing for children and their families," according to organizers.

For the event, the Kiwanis Club is stocking Ellis Lake with more than 600 pounds of catfish so that those who participate are able to catch fish. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing rods and tackle gear to the event.

Organizers said there will be bait available while supplies last. If someone is unable to bring their own fishing gear, then the event will provide "some rods, reels and tackle" on a "limited basis."

In order to be eligible for a prize, children between the ages of 4-15 must register for the event between 6:30-10 a.m. on Saturday. Organizers said three age groups will have a chance to win a "major prize." The registration table will be located at the cul-de-sac at 1205 D Street, near the Gazebo Island entrance.

Prize drawings will take place at 11 a.m. at the registration location. There will be a free pancake breakfast served by the Kiwanis Club from 7-9 a.m. for all families participating in the fishing derby. Hot dogs and soda also will be available for sale at the event, organizers said.

To further the success of the annual fishing derby, organizers said the Kiwanis Club of Marysville has partnered with various entities. They include Playzeum, the Yuba County Office of Education Youth Advisory Department, Yuba Water Agency, California Water Service, the city of Marysville, Recology Yuba-Sutter, the Marysville High School Key Club, and 4H Sutter Yuba.
