At the premiere of WeCrashed at the South by Southwest festival, Anne Hathaway shared that her costar Jared Leto defied her expectations.

"How gentle he is, that was a surprise," Hathaway told People on the red carpet."I think sometimes when you just know somebody's work from the outside, you imagine, there's a level of intensity to him. But he was so sweet, calm, and supportive of me throughout this whole process."

She added: "I don't know why I wasn't expecting that, but it was a delightful surprise."

In WeCrashed, Hathaway and Leto play Rebekah and Adam Neumann, the couple who co-founded WeWork in 2010 alongside Miguel McKelvey (Klye Marvin). WeCrashed, based on the podcast WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork, follows the rise and inevitable fall of the coworking company, once one of the world’s most valuable startups, and the Neumanns—whose chaotic love made it all possible.

Leto is known for his method acting, which he calls "immersive work." His collaborators, at least the ones on this project, speak highly of his process. "I found it electric. He is saying to you, 'For the next four months, I’m going to inhabit this person,'" says WeCrashed co-creator Lee Eisenberg told Variety.

Hathaway told Stephen Colbert she did not meet Leto out of his character until the festival—they filmed for six months, and he did not break character once. She would call him Motek (Hebrew slang for "sweetheart"), and he would call her Rivka (the Hebrew name for Rebecca).

Yet, she too enjoyed working with him. "I really respect Jared's process, and I had a wonderful time working with whoever that was, and we really created the most beautiful connection between us," Hathaway told Colbert. However, when the House of Gucci trailer dropped as they were filming, Hathaway pranked Leto, and said after wrapping an intense scene, she told him "'Just one more thing," and imitated Lady Gaga's "Father, Son, House of Gucci" line.

"I didn't know what would happen because he's so intense in his commitment to his process, but I swear to God he split into three," she joked. "It was like a horocrux: Over here was Jared, over here was Paolo Gucci, and here was Adam Neumann... I was like, 'Oh dear,' and he was like, 'Woah, I think I just time-traveled!'"
