Actress Anne Hathaway (who recently revealed that, err, nobody actually calls her Anne in her personal life) hasopened up about having to fight tooth and nail for her role in the hit movie The Devil Wears Prada – as the film's top bosses already had their sights firmly set on another well known actress for the character of Andy.
The revelation came about during the most recent episode of RuPaul's Drag Race (the American edition), where Anne popped up via video call to say hello to the competing queens and offer up some words of encouragement.
When asked by fierce competitor Rosé if she's ever had to battle it out for a role, Anne jokingly came back with, "How much time do you have?" before adding "I will give you some tea: I was the ninth choice for Devil Wears Prada... but I got it! Hang in there, never give up." Sorry, NINTH choice?! We truly couldn't imagine anybody else in the role.
According to a report from People, the casting directors already had a clear vision in mind of who they wanted to play Andy: none other than The Notebook and Mean Girls star, Rachel McAdams. It's said that Rachel turned the role down more than once and that Juliette Lewis and Clare Danes also auditioned for the part too.
Back in a 2007 interview with ELLE, Rachel actually gave a bit of an explanation as to why she didn't want to turn her hand to playing Andy, saying that she's quite selective about the projects she chooses to take on.
"I'm not going to make movies just to make movies," she is quoted as saying (with the publication adding that Rachel also said 'thanks but no thanks' to the romantic leads in Mission Impossible 3 and Casino Royale too). "I have to be passionate about it. And at the same time, I can get very distracted when I'm working, and I like to get back to my life a lot."
Fair play, Rachel, fair play! And well done Anne for being so persistent – the film is now one of her most-loved works to date and will be forever legendary. Florals... for spring? (All together now) GROUNDBREAKING.
