Anna Harvey on the pieces to buy now ahead of the new season

You may well wonder what I’m doing thinking about shopping for autumn, as most of us are still enjoying our summer holiday purchases – and our summer holidays. I am, in fact, sitting by a pool in Spain as I write this. But I’m afraid that now is the right moment to be considering what you need for next season if you want to grab the best of what’s out there.

If you don’t start thinking and planning now, you may well miss some of the best items. If you have either small or large feet, for instance, and don’t shop early, the smallest and largest sizes of shoes and boots will be in thin supply. The same can be said of fashion items such as winter coats.

Shops, both online and bricks and mortar, seldom seem to properly cater for those of us who don’t fall into the “average” category, so that adage about the early bird is worth bearing in mind if you don’t want to be left disappointed.

I’ve been disappointed many times by starting shopping only after the weather has changed, while the best items arrive in the shops during August and early September.

Going to the shops now (rather than shopping online) is not such a bad idea as the changing rooms will be empty and you will get any staff to yourself. Once everyone returns from their holidays the picture will be very different.

Avoid the sale rails and go straight for any new stock that may have arrived. The items to look out for are the essential updates you need for your wardrobe: as well as shoes, boots, and possibly a coat, you may need a jacket, some cashmere (who doesn’t?), the perfect pair of trousers and a smart dress.

Once you have these you can relax, and any further shopping for the season can be for items to complement what you’ve already bought. Ask in your favourite shops when the new season stock is due so that you can be first through the door.

You’ll feel smug once your early shopping for the best pieces is done and you can relax by the pool – or wherever you are – come rain or shine. You’ll be ready for anything the next season throws your way.
