Wow! If it truly is that simple, then we've been messing up for quite sometime. We typically don't tell our pets because we don't want to worry them. But it sounds like if you prepare them just as you would prepare your child, they'll be able to manage their separation anxiety a little bit better.

Unfortunately, separation anxiety is one of the most common and difficult-to-treat behavioral problems, according to the ASPCA. Separation anxiety in dogs is the intense and abnormal anxiety that occurs when a dog is separated from their owner. Common signs of separation anxiety include drooling, excessive barking or howling, shaking, chewing scratching, pacing, loss of appetite, and even abnormal excitement when the owner returns.

Some dog breeds are more prone to experiencing separation anxiety, but with proper diagnosis there are ways to cure separation anxiety. If you're leaving your pet for a trip, set up precautions such as removing choking hazards, leaving them in a confined space like a crate, or cover up outlets. By doing this, you'll reduce any potential dangers for your pet. You can leave food stuffed toys or their favorite blanket out to make them feel more comfortable. Soft background music could also help.

Other tips to overcome separation anxiety include practicing calm departures and arrivals, increase your time away gradually, and provide exercise and play. And in extreme cases, you could consult with your vet about the possibility of using medications.
