Angelina Jolie Just Went Bright Blonde, and the Vibe Shift Begins
We all know the ’90s are back, and Angelina Jolie’s new blonde hair just solidified our obsession. Yesterday, Jolie was seen bringing back her iconic Girl, Interrupted light blonde at her Atelier Jolie store in New York City. Despite only briefly going blonde in the late 2000s, Jolie has been loyal to brunette for decades since. And now, after transitioning to lighter hair for a while, Jolie has now fully committed to light blonde.
Although this change seems like it’s come out of nowhere, Jolie’s blonde moment was right under our nose. Since early 2023, she’s been slowly sporting lighter and lighter hair. While some of us are no strangers to an impulsive hair change, Jolie’s blonde transformation has been a long time coming.

In January of last year, Jolie was still sporting her signature dark locks. She was seen in New York City with her brunette hair, in its most chocolatey form. Flash-forward to April 2023: Jolie began transitioning her hair to a honey blonde with brown shadow roots. We didn’t realize it at the time, but Jolie was slowly preparing her hair to go even lighter—leaving us with the light blonde mane she has today. Even looking back at how shocking the honey blonde was at the time, no one suspected she would go even lighter.
While some celebrities, like Kim Kardashian, are quick to sport bleach blonde hair right away, Jolie’s transformation to blonde was much more of a slow burn. Going from dark hair to blonde can be extremely damaging, especially if the bleaching is done in a short amount of time. Jolie’s slow transformation—first with honey blonde and dark roots to now a lighter blonde, is a less damaging way to get light locks.
Although Jolie is no stranger to blonde, her transformation still took everyone by surprise. And it’s not clear why she made the switch. She wore a blonde wig for the production of the Marvel movie Eternals, and she certainly doesn’t need blonde hair for the upcoming release of Maleficent 3. The actress is in the midst of pre-production for three upcoming films: Every Note Played, Maria, and Maude v Maude. Could the blonde hair transformation be strictly business? Or does Jolie’s ’90s-esque hair signify her newest era—and a possible nod to her past iconic looks?
It’s also notable that blonde hair isn’t particularly trendy right now. Blonde celebrities, like Hailey Bieber, have been going brunette and copper—and some have even labeled blonde hair cheugy or mid. In a moment where everyone seems to be going darker and warmer, Jolie decided to go lighter and cooler—just in time for spring. The vibe shift is real, and we’re here for it.
