Angelababy Wasn’t the Only One to Spend Millions on Her Wedding

The average cost of a wedding in the United States is currently around $30,000. One-third of couples put expenses on their credit cards, and some even take out loans to fund their dream weddings. For 99 percent of the soon-to-be-betrothed population, financing a wedding isn’t easy and takes planning. But for the one percent, planning is a little different: Do you want a horse-drawn carriage or a Maserati to take you to the chapel? Custom Valentino gown or Elie Saab? Confetti to throw in the air, or cash? Live band or DJ? Not so much. Instead, the struggle is Jennifer Lopez or John Legend?

In 2015, some couples really, seriously, truly struggled with those questions: Angelababy, China’s answer to Kim Kardashian, married her longtime love in a $43 million extravaganza, with much of it sponsored by corporate partners; an heiress found her heir, and the lucky offspring threw a lavish celebration fit for royalty; and then there was the actual royalty.

But instead of seething with jealousy over the fact that these people have millions to burn on just one day (albeit, an important one) or thinking about the lives the money spent on floral arrangements could’ve saved, fed, or clothed, laugh at the ludicrousness of it all. And maybe get a little inspiration from it as well. Because a baby floating down an aisle in a cloud carriage can totally be replicated on a budget — but the question is, should it?
