Andy Cohen Says Kelly Ripa Saved His Life

Friends aren't just the people you get mimosas with on Sunday. They're the ones who see little things and nitpick until you can't ignore them anymore. That's exactly what happened with Andy Cohen and Kelly Ripa. People reports that during an appearance on SiriusXM's The Jenny McCarthy Show, Cohen explained that Ripa saw something he'd been ignoring — and it ended up being melanoma.

"There was a dot on my lip that I had for a while that I was not paying attention to," he said. "Kelly came up to me and goes, 'What's happening with your lip?' She goes, 'Get that checked out today. That is skin cancer.'"

Cohen went to a doctor, only to find that Ripa was right. "I went and got it checked out," he said. "It was malignant melanoma."

He went on to say that he had the spot surgically removed and is now much more cognizant of the time he spends out in the sun. Additionally, he told McCarthy that he gets twice-yearly full-body checks for cancer.

This isn't the first time Cohen recounted the story. During an appearance on Live With Kelly back in 2017, he thanked her for her concern.

"I want to say, by the way, that I have to shout you out for something that you don’t know I'm going to shout you out for. But I had this black dot on my bottom lip that you and I were at a party for Anderson [Cooper]'s mom in April. And you said, 'You have a black dot on your lip. I don’t think that’s something good,'" he said during his visit. "I just want to thank you because you were so dogmatic. No, honestly. And it’s all fine, but that’s a good friend and it really taught me because I am tanorexic. I love the sun, I really do. But you really helped me out there. And thank you for staying on me."
