Andy Cohen Says Daughter Is ‘One of the First’ Gestational Surrogacies in New York

Andy Cohen is a happy father of two, and his youngest, 1-year-old daughter Lucy, is actually part of a landmark change in surrogacy laws within the state of New York.

The Bravo TV personality visited Amanda Hirsch's Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, and during the conversation, he opened up about his experience with surrogacy.

Cohen said, "I was going to Albany ... [gestational] surrogacy was illegal in the state of New York until [2020] and I helped get that law passed. And Governor Cuomo, he really made it happen."

"So I went to Albany a couple of times and I was out there, you know, trying to get it passed," he went on. "I wanted to have the baby in New York, or I wanted my surrogate to have the baby in New York. And so Lucy was one of the first surrogate babies born here."

Gestational surrogacies, which involve a surrogate carrying a baby without using their own egg for fertilization, was illegal in the state of New York until The Child-Parent Security Act passed and went into effect on Feb. 15, 2021, according to the New York State Department of Health.

Cohen shared how waiting to have the baby in New York gave him a little extra time to learn about raising kids with his 4-year-old son Benjamin before noting how much Benjamin loves his little sister.

The 55-year-old often shares moments of fatherhood on social media, whether it's a special occasion like a birthday or a fun moment together.

On May 9, Cohen released a book called The Daddy Diaries: The Year I Grew Up, talking about his personal journey raising his two kids.
