Andrew Gn RTW Fall 2021

Not even a six-week stay in hospital could prevent Andrew Gn from completing his fall collection. The designer suffered a stroke at the end of last year, but you would never suspect it from looking at his opulent lineup.

The look: The collection video, titled “Hope & Glory,” was filmed in an 18th-century home — the kind that customers of the brand might live in. The camera lingered on details such as oversize crystal embroidery, jeweled belt buckles and boots dripping with pearl fringe.

Quote of note: “My women come back season after season, and I feel that rather than looking out for a new theme, I really want to continue to do beautifully crafted garments that I call heritage pieces,” the designer said. “In fact, we’ve actually started an Instagram called @andrewgn_heritage to basically say that our clothes can be kept for many, many years and even handed down to the next generation. This is also my answer to sustainability: to produce less, but produce only the very best.”

Standout pieces: Gn doubled down on his signature codes: chinoiserie, exoticism, Rococo and color. He also went big on metallics, with looks including a silver Fortuny-style pleated minidress, paired with gold mock-croc boots, and a midi-length slate-and-bronze brocade dress with pointy pagoda shoulders. Blouses came with bell-shaped or ruffled sleeves that billowed way past the wrist, contrasting with the clean lines of tailored pants, crisp shorts and asymmetric miniskirts. Underlining the maximalism of the collection, many of the outfits were capped with dramatic chandelier earrings.

Takeaway: You can’t take the glamour out of the man. Under duress, Gn sought solace from the things he loves most, powerfully distilling the essence of his brand’s appeal. His customers, raring to socialize once the pandemic recedes, will no doubt thank him for it.
