Anderson Cooper Says Parenting Makes Him Too Exhausted to Netflix & Chill & Honestly, Same

Anderson Cooper is tired. And can you blame him? He has a busy schedule as a CNN anchor, and he’s dad to sons Wyatt, 3, and Sebastian, 19, with ex Benjamin Maisani. One thing he doesn’t have room for in his schedule? Dating — or even watching Netflix at all.

“I have not been dating,” Cooper told PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. And the reason is actually so sweet. “I don’t know. I love spending time with the kids so much that the idea of taking any time away seems impossible to me.” Aww! (Why does this attitude somehow make him even more attractive?! If this was a ploy to find the right man, it’s probably going to work, honestly.)

In all seriousness, Cooper said dating is “really not” a priority at all, which is relatable. I can barely swing a date night once a month with my husband — I can’t imagine trying to find someone new with little kids at home.

He said that it was “so important” to find a romantic connection before he had kids, but now “things are lovely as they are.”

Another reason for that? He’s too damn tired, which, same! The Anderson Cooper 360 host revealed his kids wake him up at 6 a.m. every day, which means his late nights are a thing of the past.

“Either I’m working or I’m with the kids, and I’m exhausted by the time I get home,” he said. “I used to stay up until midnight or 1 a.m. every night, not doing anything particularly exciting. But even just watching stuff on Netflix or on Max or whatever — now I get home at 9:30 p.m. and I’m ready to go to bed.” This is so true! And when we do stay up later than that, we always regret it in the morning. There’s no snooze on a toddler-sized alarm clock!

Luckily, Cooper has a great relationship with his co-parent Maisani. Even though the two are no longer together, Maisani has adopted both boys (who Cooper welcomed via surrogate) and live together at their homes in New York City and Connecticut. “This is the best time in my life. There is no doubt about it,” he told PEOPLE, adding, “I feel moments of such bliss, humor and gentleness and sheer delight that it stuns me.”

Cooper also has a great relationship with Andy Cohen, who is dad to Ben, 4, and Lucy, 16 months. In a Dec. 2022 episode of the iHeartMedia podcast Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi, Cohen opened up about his and Cooper’s kids growing up with one major thing in common.

“We are these geriatric patients hobbling around chasing our children, but look — it’s another bonding thing,” the Bravo TV host said. “I think what is going to be really interesting to us, as it develops, is being gay dads and as our kids start realizing more and more ‘Oh I have gay dads.’”

“I am so glad that Ben [Cohen] will grow up with Wyatt [Cooper] and that Ben will grow up seeing Anderson and Benjamin [Maisani] raising Wyatt and Sebastian,” he added.
