Amy Schumer Wants to Change Fashion for Women Everywhere

Don’t listen to the messages insisting your body needs to fit with impossibly set societal standards — listen to Amy Schumer. The comedienne appeared on the Today Show Friday to discuss body image, her own struggles with it, and her efforts to help change how debilitating poor self esteem can be.

“It’s an emotional thing,” she admitted to Maria Shriver about her battle with body issues. “It’s been a struggle for me my whole life, and especially just being in the entertainment industry. Standing on a stage in front of people, I can’t perform my best or be confident if I’m not sure — if I’m pulling at something [I’m wearing]. And sometimes I would just want to throw in the towel and be like, “I’m not gonna go do standup tonight.”

But through her work on Trainwreck, Schumer was connected with stylist Leesa Evans — a longtime collaborator of Judd Apatow’s — who helped the actress learn to dress for her body, in clothing that made her feel as good as she looked. "My sister and I, we both have always dressed badly,“ she explained. "Leesa had given me this gift of showing me how to dress and feel good. And she didn’t have to do this, she just did. She shopped for my sister also, and seeing my little sister wearing a little blazer and a shirt and looking just like a strong, beautiful woman, it was [Schumer tears up] to see this person I care the most about being given those tools was really moving for me.”

The pair teamed up to bring their uniquely positive fashion perspective to the Goodwill of Southern California and to educate and inspire women through fashion. “I don’t think we all need to be fashionistas to feel confident and good and like you have a good outfit.” But it’s not just the individuals who had the opportunity to attend their day of outreach that they want to help. The Emmy winner strives to be a role model and draw the curtain back on Hollywood. "I’m coming out like, ‘OK, here’s what’s going on: No one’s just naturally thin. Everyone’s starving,“ Schumer said.
