  • Schumer has a history of back issues, starting in 2018 when she opened up about "excruciating" pain.

Amy Schumer has been nothing but open about her health, her pregnancy, and her love life, and her recent medical diagnosis is no exception. On Thursday, the 38-year-old comedian revealed that she underwent an MRI for her back.

In the first Instagram story, Schumer snapped a mirror selfie of her in a hospital gown during her trip to the hospital. "Mri gown lookin' right," she captioned the photo. In the next picture, Schumer shared the results of her MRI, stating that she has herniated discs.

"Just a couple herniated discs. No surgery required!" she wrote. "I had them before the pregnancy. The pain when away during pregnancy. McKenzie Method and my trainer @ajcorectology are helping!"

This is not the first time that the new mom has dealt with back issues. In September 2018, Schumer took to Instagram to open up about her condition.

"About 7 months ago I was in excruciating back and hip pain. From old volleyball and surfing injuries I have a herniated disc, a bulging disc and a labral tear in my hip," she wrote in the caption to video of her doctor explaining her diagnosis. "These great people nursed me back to health and made me stronger than ever. I want to thank @tdathletesedge for pushing me to recovery beyond what I thought possible."

"You don’t have to live with pain. Do the work to feel better. It’s worth it!" she continued. "I know I’m lucky I have the time and money to heal. Everyone should be entitled to great care. Everyone. Period."

What is a herniated disc?

Discs are the small cushions that separate the bones of the spine. When one of the discs gets pushed out of place, it can begin to tear into the outer layer of the spine, which can irritate nearby nerve endings and cause pain, numbness, or weakness.

You can have a herniated disc without symptoms, though sometimes the pain becomes so intense that surgery is required. Schumer, who wrote that she will not need surgery, has been practicing the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy.

The method is a pain management protocol in which doctors identify the specific needs of the patient (such as where the pain is coming from) using an assessment, and then put together a personalized set of exercises that target posture, sleep modifications, and other advice to improve pain and alignment.

In 2018, Schumer said that her trainers helped her feel better and she had "major breakthroughs" doing things she thought she would never be able to do again. Along with the McKenzie Method, boxing has also helped the comedian find relief.

And it sounds like she's optimistic for a speedy recovery this time around. "They said it should go away in 6-12 months!" she wrote on her Instagram story.
