It's one thing to drive down the California coast—but imagine taking in the views without the added stress of the steering wheel. Amtrak's Coast Starlight train, which passes the Pacific on its way from Seattle to Los Angeles, is one of the many popular routes discounted under Amtrak's "Track Friday Sale," beginning on Friday, November 29.

Thanks to the annual sale, taking the scenic route through America has just gotten a whole lot cheaper. The special offers 35 percent off nationwide travel from December 9, 2019 to April 30, 2020. Fares start as low as $19 for regular trains, and $75 for Acela business class trains. The discount is automatically applied on the Amtrak website or on the Amtrak app.

No code is required to take advantage of the sale, but speed is. Reduced fares to your next dream destination only last through Monday, December 2.

So, where will you go?

Before planning, note that reduced fare for trips starting December 9, 2019 is only available on select train lines. Discounted trips on other popular lines, like the Acela, Northeast Regional, and Vermonter, will begin on January 6, 2020. All fares are available through April 30, 2020.

Further, blackout dates apply for the holidays: December 22-23, and January 2-3. With that in mind, here are a few ideas.

For an international adventure, step aboard the Amtrak Adirondack in New York's Penn Station and step off, 10 hours later, in Montreal, Canada. The ambitious traveler (or Little House on the Prairie fan) can embark on Amtrak's Empire Builder, a 46-hour journey that cuts through the Great Plains on its way from Chicago to Seattle. Finally, a trip from Chicago to San Francisco on the iconic California Zephyr allows for unprecedented views of the Rocky Mountains, and is considered one of the most scenic routes in North America. Check out more ideas here.

There are shorter trips, too. Hop between New York and Boston or Washington, D.C. for just $39. Routes between Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, as well as New York and Philadelphia, are $29. Or, upgrade to an Acela high-speed train.

Train travel is the ultimate way of turning the journey into the destination. Plus, it's a chance to see beautiful landscapes and get through at least one book. What more could a person want out of a trip?
