Amid Quarantine, Makeup Artists Are Turning Themselves Into Canvases

“All glittered up and nowhere to go,” wrote makeup artist Grace Ahn beneath of a recent snap of herself with shimmering teal lids and bubblegum pink lips, the metallic flashes of color punctuated by drawn-in, pencil-thin brows (her natural arches held down by a glue stick and concealer, of course). The occasion? One of her newly minted “Makeup Houseparty” sessions on the group-video-chatting application, which finds her and her fellow makeup-artist friends virtually gathering to partake in a playfully themed makeup forum.

As beauty lovers have likely registered, in the time of social distancing, many makeup artists are now turning themselves into the canvas and sharing the inspiring results on Instagram. “I rarely take the time to do my own face,” admitted makeup artist Erin Parsons, who meticulously applied “about a hundred individual lashes” for an impossibly full-fringed look. “Although what’s going on in the world is horrific, I have found playing with makeup during this downtime to be quite therapeutic,” she added.

In a similar spirit, Doniella Davy, the mastermind behind Euphoria’s mesmerizing makeup looks, became her own blank slate, engaging in some “playtime with itty-bitty rhinestones,” and breaking down the secrets behind four different crystal-studded eye looks. Meanwhile, Bob Scott uploaded a video of themselves smudging holographic cyan pencil along the upper and lower lash lines to a diffused cat-eye effect, complete with jazz playing in the background. Also accenting the eyes was Kate Synnott, who revealed how she used steel blue and deep cobalt pigments from Victoria Beckham Beauty’s Smoky Eye Brick in Royal to create a “Friday-night glam” smoky eye just to “sit on the couch,” as well as Christine Cherbonnier, who blended an iridescent gold eyeshadow onto the lids after being inspired by the forsythia flowers outside of her window.

For those with more minimalist or time-saving inclinations, look no further than TyLynn Nguyen’s vivid red lips or Gita Bass’s Zoom-ready, five-minute face. Here, scroll through and see it all for yourself, and bookmark for inspiration.
