American Airlines has unveiled its latest network announcement with several new routes in the Caribbean and Latin America for the spring and summer of 2024.

On March 28, 2024, American Airlines will launch service to Tulum’s new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport (TQO), the carrier announced on Friday. American will operate once-daily flights from Charlotte and Miami and twice-daily from its mega-hub at Dallas-Fort Worth, using its staple 737 aircraft for short- to medium-haul routes.

“American continues to enhance our comprehensive global network with more nonstops to destinations our customers want to visit,” said Brian Znotins, senior vice president of network and schedule planning of American Airlines. “With more flights to Tulum from the U.S. than any other airline, American will offer convenient nationwide connectivity to this popular vacation gem on the Riviera Maya.”

Tickets go on sale today on American’s website or through its mobile app. With the new Tulum service, American will be one of the U.S. airlines to serve the Riviera Maya, as the carrier also offers up to 40 peak daily departures to Cancun.

Tulum’s new airport is scheduled to open next month, but it won’t be able to accept international air service until the end of March. So far, Delta Air Lines and Spirit Airlines have announced flights to Tulum, but American’s new routes give the carrier a competitive edge as it connects three cities to the popular leisure destination.

As part of this larger route announcement for 2024, American Airlines plans to increase service on many of its existing flights to the Caribbean and Latin America. Starting June 5, 2024, American will operate these routes with the following frequencies:

  • Charlotte to Bridgetown, Barbados: Once-daily

  • Charlotte to Liberia, Costa Rica: Once-daily

  • Charlotte to St. Thomas: Twice-daily

  • Dallas to Guatemala City: Twice-daily

  • Dallas to San José, Costa Rica: Twice-daily

  • Miami to Antigua: Twice-daily

  • Miami to Anguilla: Twice-daily

  • Miami to Guyana: Twice-daily

  • Miami to Trinidad and Tobago: Twice-daily

  • Miami to Turks and Caicos: 3x-daily

  • Miami to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Twice-daily

In addition to these routes, American is eyeing an additional service to Tokyo in the new year. The carrier has filed once-daily, year-round service from New York-JFK to Tokyo-HND with its Boeing 777-200 aircraft, pending approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
