'American Idol' Twitter Has Feelings About Chris Martin and Katy Perry Calling Out Arthur Gunn

Arthur Gunn took a serious risk on American Idol last night — and fans are split on whether it was worth it or not.

The 2020 runner up, who was able to compete in this year's top 10 after Idol producers introduced a controversial comeback twist, prompted a stir on social media Sunday night when he took the stage during Coldplay night. When preparing for one of his performances with Coldplay's very own lead singer Chris Martin, Arthur introduced a totally new version of the band's song "In My Place."

"Funny enough, I always thought the melody was the best bit — and that's the bit you've thrown away," a surprised Chris said to Arthur. Despite being initially taken aback by the bold move, Chris later seemed to walk back his oh-so subtle shade, telling Arthur that he has his support for trying something new.

"Some people are very protective of the original," Chris told the Idol hopeful. "And I feel like, no, the nature of music is that it's an ongoing conversation. It's water moving. I think what you're doing is brave, and I'm all in."

Apparently, judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie agreed with the rewrites, encouraging Arthur to go with his gut and lean into his unique artistry. That said, Katy Perry was not as enthused about Arthur drastically changing up "In My Place."

"One thing to know about artists, we're very stubborn," Katy began. "I think Chris was saying it kindly. The best part of that song is the melody. But of course, you are Arthur Gunn, and you do you … Sometimes it is about playing along just a little bit. Because I did want to sing along with you, Arthur, but I didn't know that melody.”

The split verdict among the judge panel was reflective of the comments coming in from American Idol Twitter on Sunday. While some praised Arthur and called his rendition a "wonderful performance," many thought the remake wasn't a great move. "It’s disrespectful to completely change the arrangements of 'In My Place' by Coldplay .. sorry Arthur Gunn I can’t give any vote for you tonight," one fan tweeted. "I like that Arthur Gunn wants to be his own guy, but find it cocky to tell Chris he will do it his own way when it is Coldplay's song," another said.

Mixed reviews aside, Arthur wound up being eliminated on Sunday night alongside Hunter Metts. Now, the competition is down to the top five — Grace Kinstler, Willie Spence, Caleb Kennedy, Casey Bishop and Chayce Beckham.

Though Arthur is out of the competition, we have a feeling his fans will follow him wherever he goes next. On March 22, he released his new album Khoj. This album comes after he released Self-Titled in July of 2020 and an EP called Grahan in August of 2018.
