American Idol is back, and the season 5 (the show’s 20th season overall) auditions are already leaving quite the impression on judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. But no one could've predicted that Katy would run off the stage after hearing contestant Normandy’s voice.

On Sunday night, the ABC competition series introduced 29-year-old gamer Normandy from Baltimore, Maryland. Katy was immediately intrigued by Normandy's carrot purse and bunny shoes. But the “Dark House” singer was even more surprised when she heard Normandy's voice and her song of choice, “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner. Within seconds of the audition, Katy immediately took off thinking it was a prank.

“F--k this job! I’m outta here,” Katy said. “I will not be set up!”

In her path, Katy left Lionel, Luke and Normandy stunned by her unexpected reaction. “What the heck? What the heck just happened?” Lionel said. “Katy, come back!” Eventually, the judge returned to her seat albeit cautiously. Though Normandy volunteered to sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” for Katy, Luke insisted that she go on with her original plan. Normandy proceeded to sing “Proud Mary” followed by Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain.”

While Luke and Lionel instantly wanted to give Normandy a shot, Katy had to be encouraged a little bit. “I want to roll the dice on her,” Katy said contemplating out loud. “Okay, alright. This is a little weird. I’m going to say yes … Oh wow. This is crazy. Season 20 is officially weird! You’re going to surprise a lot of people.”

With that, Normandy nabbed her ticket to Hollywood. As she celebrated the huge news, American Idol fans took to social media with their thoughts.

“She speaks and sings like r&b singer Miche’le……Miche’le has a powerhouse singing voice!!! It will be interesting to hear Normandy develop her own style,” one person wrote on YouTube. “Give her hours of vocal training and her singing voice could be truly heard. I think she could do it,” a different fan said.
