  • American Idol's performances on Sunday were deemed an "insult" to Queen's former lead singer, Freddie Mercury, by fans.

  • The episode resulted in contestants Alyssa Raghu and Walker Burroughs going home.

  • Adam Lambert, who mentored the contestants on Queen night, is set to appear in the ABC documentary The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story.

American Idol took a risk on last night's episode and had the remaining eight performers take on Queen songs only ... anddd let's just say fans watching at home were not thrilled about it.

To help the contestants out, former Idol runner up and current Queen lead singer Adam Lambert returned to the show. After Adam offered up his best advice on how to be a better performer, each contestant took the stage to belt out a hit from the legendary rock band.

Despite the contestants' hard work, viewers were not at all impressed. Wade Cota's attempt at "We Are the Champions" had many people upset, with one viewer even saying that Freddie would be "rolling over in his grave." Not only that, but Wade was noticeably off tempo and, as many pointed out, "out of tune" throughout his performance.

Apart from Wade, many were disappointed in Alejandro Aranda's take on "Under Pressure," saying that it wasn't the right choice to do an acoustic version of that song.

Despite the harsh remarks, both Wade and Alejandro made it through to the top six, while fans sent home Alyssa Raghu and Walker Burroughs. But regardless, America was making it sound like everyone deserved to go home last night:

On the bright side though, the performances did make many fans realize just how hard Adam's job really is. Trying to fill Freddie's shoes is clearly not something everyone can do.

"Wonder why it’s not the best week? Queen songs are hard to sing..Freddie Mercury had a 4 Octave range. Shows you how good Adam is that he can tour with Queen," one fan observed. "Ok, if anyone really thought any of these contestants really sang their Queen song , then y’all really need go to a Queen + Adam Lambert concert live and see how it’s REALLY done," another tweeted.

Speaking of Adam, the singer will appear front and center on ABC's two-hour documentary entitled The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story on Monday night at 8 p.m. ET. The film will focus on Adam's journey on American Idol and how he eventually became the lead singer of Queen. After all, it was his AI audition singing "Bohemian Rhapsody" 10 years ago that first grabbed the attention of Brian May, Queen's leading guitarist.

"It was evident that he was something completely out of the ordinary," Brian wrote in his book Queen in 3-D about Adam. "And into my inbox came a deluge of people saying, 'You must get together with this guy; he is the natural successor to Freddie; he is the guy you should be touring with.'”

Lo and behold, those fans got their wish. Adam has been touring with Queen all over the world since 2014.

So, maybe the moral of the story is ... maybe American Idol should forego Queen night next year, and just leave it to Adam. Just a suggestion.
