'American Idol' Fans Are Making Very Bold Comments After Noah Thompson’s Top 24 Performance

After his nerves got the best of him, Noah Thompson returned to the American Idol stage and blew everyone away.

On Monday night, the show’s fifth season (overall 20th season) followed up Hollywood Week with showstopper performances. For his own performance, the Kentucky native decided to put a country twist on Rihanna’s R&B ballad “Stay.” Unlike Sunday evening’s “shaky” duet, Noah walked out determined to earn a spot in the top 24. Though American Idol judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie were initially skeptical about his song choice, they quickly took note of the 19-year-old artist's unique rendition.

“This isn’t a song I would usually do but it reminds me of being back home because it is a song me and my girlfriend Angel would sing together,” Noah revealed on the show. “Singing that song kind of shows what else I can do. I was hoping maybe that’s what the judges would want to see.”

In the end, Noah's decision to be a little daring for the American Idol judges paid off. Though Katy, Luke and Lionel got up on their feet to give Noah a standing ovation, the country music singer still wasn’t sure if he'd “delivered a top 24 performance” but he knew he'd “tried [his] best.”

After hearing that he was moving on to the next round, the aspiring artist was overwhelmed with emotion. Meanwhile, folks watching from home were in awe that Noah still had doubts about his talent. “Dude has no idea how special his voice is glad to see him take a risk,” one person wrote on YouTube. “This kid is sooo humble, appreciative and down to earth country,” another added.

Unsurprisingly, Noah’s unexpected song selection also captivated everyone — because just like Luke said, no one thought he was going to choose it. “I just wasn't expecting that song choice.... or the feeling I got from his vocals on it! Just WOW!” a different follower said. Others congratulated him on making a memorable comeback. “Welcome back Noah! He had a rough and shaky duet last night but he came back stronger and really confident with his performance and song choice. His best performance he has ever given!” a follower commented.

What’s more, many collectively agreed that he might just be the next winner. “Mark my word[s]. He’s gonna be this year’s idol! 🍾,” someone else wrote.

Whether or not Noah will be in the finale is still up to chance and American Idol fan votes. In the meantime, we’re already looking forward to seeing what other songs he performs next.
