“American Horror Story” Fans Think They Figured Out Season 8’s Theme

And it sounds terrifying.

In the previous seven seasons of American Horror Story, creator Ryan Murphy and his talented casts (including celebs such as Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, and Sarah Paulson) have immersed us in a range of worlds: a New Orleans school for witches, murder house, circus show, and even post-election America. All of them have been filled with thrills, chills, and a little bit of ick factor.

Each season of AHS tends to be shrouded in secrecy before it debuts, keeping fans guessing as to what the theme could be. But it looks like some American Horror Story fanatics may have discovered a very important clue for the next season.

Let's run through what we already know about season eight. It will not be the much-speculated crossover between the seasons Murder House and Coven. According to an interview with Ryan, that murderous mashup will probably be saved for season ten. But he’s hinted that season could be set in a different time, and said, “All I’ll say is that I want to go to the future.”

Now, several AHS fan accounts have apparently discovered that a trademark has been filed by Twentieth Century Fox for American Horror Story: Radioactive, which could possibly mean that’s the theme of season eight.

A “radioactive” theme could be about all sorts of things — it could be the story of a post-apocalyptic world and the people who are left, like The Leftovers, a small town with a big secret and kids with powers like Stranger Things, a zombie show (though we seem to have that covered already), or something about mutated animals. Some fans on Reddit even think it could be a like a "Lord of the Flies scenario" or "fallout shelter and its inhabitants." Maybe Evan will get sent up to space? There’s a ton of possibility with that kind of theme, and it’s definitely something AHS could have some fun with creating terrifying villains and storylines. (Or, you know, it could be about Imagine Dragons. OK, probably not.)

Before you get too excited thinking of possible scenarios for Radioactive, the name could be a fakeout. Roanoke was referred to as Cul-de-Sac to keep its theme a secret before the premiere. We’ll just have to keep a close eye on all things AHS and wait to hear from Ryan himself. But if we know anything about the series and its creator, the upcoming season will probably be totally epic.
