Update: Versace Responds to 'American Crime Story's' Gianni Versace Murder Special

From Harper's BAZAAR

Update, 10/19/16: Yesterday, it was announced that American Crime Story would cover the murder of Gianni Versace for its second season and while many fashion lovers rejoiced, not everyone is totally excited for the special.

According to WWD, the fashion house responded to news of the series with a statement that it, "neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming series about Versace. The series should only be seen as a work of fiction."

The American Crime Story special isn't the first unauthorized special surrounding the Versace murder. Antonio Banderas is currently starring as the late designer in an upcoming biopic surrounding his life and murder that is also unauthorized by the Versace family and fashion house.

Original Article, 10/18/16: The first season of American Crime Story took on the trial of O.J. Simpson, and also took home a boatload of Emmys for its cast and for the show itself. The show was such a success that it has already been renewed for two more seasons, and one will tackle the tragic death of a fashion icon.

Variety reports that the third season of the FX show will focus on the 1997 murder of Gianni Versace. The season, tentatively called Versace/Cunanan: American Crime Story, will be based on the 1999 book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth.

Versace was only 50 when he was killed. He had just gone to his favorite Miami restaurant to pick up an Italian newspaper and was opening the gate to his villa when Andrew Cunanan, 27, fatally shot him twice in the head. The designer was just one of five people Cunanan had killed over the course of three months. After an eight-day manhunt, Cunanan committed suicide in a houseboat just three miles from Versace's home.

According to Deadline, the second and third seasons of American Crime Story will film at the same time. The second season, which focuses on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, will air first in 2017. So we'll have to wait for quite some time to see Versace's story-but the outfits alone will be worth it. And so will the cast, as Deadline reports that an A-list actress is in talks to play Donatella Versace. In the meantime, Antonio Banderas is set to play Gianni in an unauthorized biopic, which will be a good preview of the drama to come on the small screen.
