Michael Ketterer, who placed fifth on this season of America’s Got Talent, has been arrested for domestic violence, TMZ reported Friday. A representative of the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the arrest to GoodHousekeeping.com.

According to TMZ, Ketterer was taken into police custody after getting into a fight with his wife; police saw she had a visible red mark. Because of the injury, he was booked for felony domestic violence, but the case will likely be downgraded to a misdemeanor because the injury was minor. He was released after posting $50,000 bail.

Ketterer told TMZ the arrest was a “misunderstanding” after he and his wife got into a fight in a hotel room. Police were called, and she told them she did not want to press charges. But police arrested him anyway, “telling him the law’s the law.”

Simon Cowell gave Ketterer the coveted Golden Buzzer this season, and later cried during his performance because he connected to Ketterer as a father. Ketterer is a pediatric mental health care nurse and part-time worship leader with six children, five of whom were adopted from foster care. He ended up collaborating with Garth Brooks at Cowell’s request on a song for the season finale of America’s Got Talent.
