America Ferrera is using her stunning Oscars 2020 red carpet look to send out an important message. The Superstore actress, who arrived at the Dolby Theater on February 9th with husband Ryan Piers Williams, gave fans a sneak peek of the gown and matching headpiece on Instagram and revealed the look was a tribute to her heritage.
“#Oscars for the final farewell to 12 years of How to Train Your Dragon & my Berkian Warrior Queen Astrid,” Ferrera wrote in her Insta caption. “Tonight, I bring my own warrior ancestors with me, the indigenous Lenca tribe of Honduras.”
The Alberta Ferretti limited edition ruby-red gown cinched at the waist and gold headpiece is Ferrera’s own take on her How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World character, Queen Astrid. The movie is nominated for an Oscar for Animated Feature Film at Sunday’s show.
Further in her post, Ferrera’s inspiration for the outfit came to light. She included a photograph of children, presumably from the Lenca tribe of Honduras, who the actress draws her ancestry from, in addition to a photo of a man also presumably from the Lenca tribe wearing a similar headband to Ferrera’s.
In an interview with E!, Ferrera revealed that she will miss the 12 years she spent working on the How To Train Your Dragon series, but looks forward to the future, especially her second child being born soon. She revealed the pregnancy via Instagram back in December.
We’re completely here for Ferrera taking some inspo from her warrior roots, and we also can’t wait to see the star on-screen in her newest Netflix project, Gentefied.
