There was a lot to love about Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, from Margot Robbie's never-ending themed press tour looks to the bangers on the soundtrack from artists like Dua Lipa and Ice Spice. But, most importantly, I'm thankful that it re-introduced America Ferrera as a bona-fide movie star. And at the 2024 Golden Globes on January 7, she showed up looking the part in a shimmering gown and fresh bob haircut.

In fact, we were so into her bob that we had to go right to her hairstylist, Aviva Perea, to get all the exclusive details.

Perea tells Byrdie that she was inspired by Ferrera's custom silver gown, which had a very old Hollywood feel. However, instead of going with typical glam, Perea wanted to do something a little more lived-in—like Fererra had her hair done the day before, and now it's more casual and touchable. She adds that Fererra always wants to try something modern, unexpected, and new.

"Award show days are always very long, and even when you're creating at home, you want to have insurance that your look is going to stay how you want it all night," says Perea. "A tip is that styling always starts in the shower and that the layering of the styling products with reliable formulas gives the hair the texture and longevity that you need to rely on. Plus, I look for products with no harmful chemicals so you can keep the integrity of the look you're trying to create intact." Perea used all Briogeo products for the look.

To start, Perea washed Fererra's hair with the Don't Despair, Repair! Super Moisture Shampoo andConditioner ($39 each). "The key to the longevity of a look and successful execution of any style must start in the shower," she says. "If the hair is prepped with the wrong products, you have to fight harder to make the look work. During this award season, I am doing America’s hair so many times, and it’s so crucial to keep the hair moisturized. This duo has algae extract, b-vitamin, and rosehip oil to help strengthen damaged hair and prevent future breakage.”

Then, she applied the Superfoods Avocado + Kiwi Moisture Leave-In Conditioner ($25) to Fererra's wet hair to help with detangling and to leave the it feeling soft and healthy. She also used the Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Blow Dry Spray ($25) at the roots, spraying it on in one-inch sections.

"I'm in love with this volumizer because it kicks up the roots right when styling with the maltodextrin, which coats the hair with natural sugar starch to plump the hair," explains Perea. "It also keeps working through the night because it has lemon and witch hazel extract, which efficiently absorbs oil without feeling sticky or heavy."

Next, it was time for styling. "Starting at the nape of the neck, I blow dry in small sections to keep the super short hair close to the neck and not puff up," she says. "[With] hair this short, we want to avoid a round silhouette."

Then, from the ear up, Perea used a paddle brush to keep the hair close to the actor's head and create a subtle flick out the sides. "With a flat iron, I held the iron horizontally and went through her hair, creating slight bends, concentrating on flicking out the ends," says Perea. "We really didn’t want the hair to be round or curled under in any way."

To amp up the texture even more, Perea used the Superfoods Banana + Coconut Hydrating Soft Wave Texture Spray ($25), which she loves for a beachy wave without any stickiness or crunch. Just before Ferrera headed out to the carpet, Perea put the finishing touches on the ends of the hair with the Don't Despair, Repair! Strengthening Treatment Hair Oil ($30).

"The smallest amount goes a long way and packs such a beautiful punch," she says of the oil. "Even though the look we are going for is a more matte texture, when you are being photographed, it’s important that your ends look healthy, and this oil, which is packed with ceramides and macadamia nut derivative, makes hair feel and look its absolute best.”

A soft, smoky eye, glossy pink lips, and plenty of gorgeous diamonds finished off the look.
