Amber Heard spoke out about her experiences with domestic abuse in a powerful new PSA in partnership with the #GirlGaze Project, which supports women breaking into photography. Filmed by photographer Amanda de Cadenet, who spearheads #GirlGaze, the video's timing coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25.

A few days after filing for divorce from Johnny Depp in May, Heard also filed a domestic violence restraining order against him. It was later dropped around the same time they settled their divorce out of court.

Heard's two-minute PSA, which features her speaking directly to the camera, is revealing, raw, and honest as she opens up about her experience with domestic abuse.

"How is this happening to me?" Heard asks in the video. "I'm strong. I'm smart. I'm not a victim."

She goes on to address perceptions of stigma and dives into the complexities of the situation. Yes, there are alarming statistics, but when the numbers become personal, "When it happens in your home, behind closed doors, with someone you love, it's not as straightforward."

An emotional Heard also gives advice for women who are in abusive situations: "Telling someone safe is the beginning of choosing yourself."

"It’s the only way that people are going to feel comfortable in coming forward, raising their voices, standing up for themselves, is if we change the system in place that keeps them quiet," she continues. "Speak up. Speak up. Raise your voice. Your voice is the most powerful thing, and we, together, as women standing shoulder to shoulder, cannot and will not any longer accept silence."
