One of my small joys and acts of self-care is watching a horror movie while very slowly and deliberately coating every strand of my (now-blonde) hair in an oil or cream; I try to do this DIY overnight treatment twice a week. The thing is that my hair is thick and I have a lot of it, so I end up spending hundreds of dollars on products a month. Inexpensive but still effective swaps are in order, such as Bronner Brothers’s Tropical Roots Stimulating Hair Growth Oil, which is currently on sale at Amazon for just $5.

The 8-ounce spray is usually $9—already a steal—but now that it’s 44 percent off, I could buy three bottles and still pay less than I do for my regular Chopt salad order. According to the brand, the Tropical Roots Oil combats frizz, promotes growth, and prevents split ends. The question is, of course, does it work? Shoppers have spoken: More than 2,500 five-star ratings indicate that it does in fact get the job done.

The sulfate-free oil is formulated with a host of delicious-sounding ingredients including guava, rosemary, and sage. Guava prevents the formation of androgen, a hormone responsible for hair loss, and is also vitamin-rich to strengthen and protect the hair follicles. Rosemary is one of the GOATs of hair care ingredients with hair growth benefits as effective as minoxidil (AKA Rogaine), plus it mitigates dandruff and makes strands strong and silky. Lastly, sage is an under-the-radar ingredient that provides an additional boost of hair growth benefits.

One reviewer said their “thick, curly hair has been falling out” in addition to looking “dull” and “unhealthy.” After two months of use, they saw “fuller, thicker, and shinier” strands that were frizz-free, too. Another said that Bronner Brothers’s Tropical Roots Oil makes their hair “grow like a weed.”

Head to Amazon to shop Bronner Brothers’s Tropical Roots Stimulating Hair Growth Oil while it's $5.
