If you’ve ever contemplated living a more minimalist lifestyle there’s a good chance you’ve taken at least a casual Internet stroll down Tiny House Lane, the mecca of simplified living. Whether on a quest to lessen your environmental footprint or simply reduce life’s clutter down to the bare essentials, the tiny house is this decade’s version of the leave it all behind and live off-the-grid fantasy.

But that fantasy becomes a little more real when you consider the investment required to pare life down to a mere few hundred square feet; think well over $100,000 for the wood-paneled, rustic chicArtist’s Musetiny house of your dreams, ditto for the luxurious mountain cabin-esque SLEDHaus.”

Enter Nomad. The Canadian company set out to make micro homes living accessible to a wide variety of incomes by creating their build-it-yourself Cube micro-house. At 13’5” wide by 13’5” deep and 13’5” high, the Cube features all the indispensable home elements one would expect—kitchen, living area, bathroom and modern curving staircase leading to a lofted bedroom—at an affordable $38,800 plus shipping on Amazon.

Similar to Ikea, Nomad keeps costs down by enlisting buyers to put their micro-houses together themselves, or at least hire someone to do it. (The company says that the build requires at least two individuals with a handyman-level of knowledge, plus plumbing and electrical skills.)

What the model sacrifices in assembly ease it makes up for in style. The Cube boasts a clean, modern look with metal and wood exterior and large windows that make the space feel surprisingly airy, rather than claustrophobic. White cabinetry and a stainless steel sink lend to the interior’s sleek ambiance, plus the kitchen is designed to accommodate full-sized appliances—no dorm-style mini-fridges here.

The Cube is pretty much the intersection of the live-the-simple-life fantasy and the build-a-house-with-your-own-two-hands fantasy, and likely the cheapest version you’ll find, complete with actual blueprints. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
