Amazon Is Reportedly Rebooting ‘A League of Their Own’ As a TV Series

So many reboots, so little time! With the recent success of revivals such as Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Roseanne (both of which have been renewed for a second season), TV execs are on the hunt for new ways to turn nostalgia into gold, and Amazon Studios just may have found it: The network is reportedly redeveloping the 1992 classic movie A League of Their Own into a full-fledged TV series!

The original sports comedy-drama was directed by Penny Marshall and told the story of Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and her younger sister, Kit (Lori Petty), who are recruited to join an All-American Girls Professional Baseball League when the country’s men of have been called away to fight in World War II. The reboot, however, will be a liiiittle different.

The series version would return without its two lead characters of the Hinson sisters. Instead, it will borrow elements of the film’s baseline and its humor while creating modern stories for the women involved with the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.

As with the film, the show will reportedly be set in the ’40s (1943, to be exact), taking viewers on a journey as the women orm their league, play ball, get hurt, have late night bar crawls and sexual awakenings, and embark on road trips.

Mozart in the Jungle‘s Will Graham and Broad City‘s Abbi Jacobson (who reportedly reached out to Marshall and Davis for their blessing) and both on board to write and executive produce.

This marks the second time A League of Their Own will be brought to the small screen. The first was in 1993, when CBS recruited original cast members Megan Cavanagh, who played the role of Marla Hooch, and Tracy Reiner as “Betty Spaghetti) with Marshall directing. Unfortunately, the show only lasted three episodes.

Here’s to hoping Amazon’s fresh take has a far different fate!
