This year sucks. It's a pile of bad. A mountain of awful. Online shopping for expensive stuff briefly made less expensive is one of our few therapeutic outlets. (A tiny little disclaimer: Shopping is not condoned as an actual therapeutic practice.) It's like shining a 15-year-old flashlight on its last pull of alkaline D battery into a black abyss. It won't really save you from the darkness, but it won't make the darkness...darker. In a year like 2020, even a story about a seemingly benign shopping event like Amazon Prime Day isn't safe from these ghoulish metaphors.

So, Amazon Prime Day, when Amazon dumps a heap of deals onto its labyrinthine website and invites you to have at it. The deals range from things like 3 percent off a pack of socks to 72 percent off a 4K TV. You have to do some hunting. You might have to do it while juggling work, maybe while chaperoning Zoom school, maybe while job searching. But if you commit, you'll likely dig up some sales on cool tech and appliances, home furnishings, style and accessories, and more that'll have made it worthwhile. Now, some key questions, answered.

When is Prime Day?

Right now. Feel that plop of adrenaline? Amazon kicked Prime Day 2020 off at midnight, and it’ll run through tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14. The October timing makes it convenient for holiday gift shopping on Amazon and stocking up for a long, cold, isolated winter—you know, with things like comfy sweatshirts, thick wool socks, board games, noise-cancelling headphones, soup.

For whom is Prime Day?

As the title implies, Prime Day is for Amazon Prime members. If you're not one of those, you can become one. It costs $119 per year. You can also sign up on a trial basis.

What are the best Prime Day sales right now?

Deals pop up and rapidly disappear over this two-day stretch, and trying to predict them is an exercise in idiocy. In years past, however, great name-brand stuff has been included in the event. Think Apple AirPods and Apple Watches. The latest 4K TVs from brands like Samsung and TCL. Video games and console accessories from PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo. Amazon's smart home devices—like Echo speakers, Kindles, and Fire TV accessories—will definitely go on sale. That is, if they aren’t already. On the fashion front, past Prime Day saw deals from brands like Calvin Klein, Adidas, and Timex.

Amazon is releasing deals on the Prime Day landing page, which you can check out here. Below, you'll find a selection of cool shit that's currently discounted, for the moment. Amazon updates prices and sales constantly. Let the adrenaline flow. And check back when you’ve got time to spare.
