Amazon Is Killing Off The Comixology App

Comixology unlimited splash

Comixology, for a long time, has been one of the go-to places for reading comics and manga online. It had a huge library, with a pretty good selection of comics from across Marvel, DC, and a bunch of other smaller comic publishers, and a reading and library management interface that was beloved by fans. Things took a turn for the worse after a series of updates in 2022, and now, owner Amazon is killing off the app altogether.

Amazon, via the Comixology Twitter account, revealed that starting from December 4 the app will be no more. Amazon is pulling the app from iOS, Android, and its own bespoke flavor of Android, Fire OS, and merging owners’ libraries into its much more popular Kindle app.

Amazon promises that all Comixology comics, graphic novels, and manga that are owned or borrowed by users will be available in the Kindle app, and that you shouldn’t lose any content in the changeover. We say ‘shouldn’t’ because Amazon is already outlining some of the issues you may face when switching over, detailing that some books may not appear.

Comixology Unlimited subscriptions will still be available in the Kindle app, and previously subscribed users will be able to continue their subscription unimpeded. And if you were thinking you’d just be able to use the app already installed on your phone or tablet, think again — the Comixology app will stop working altogether, and will prompt you to instead download the Kindle app.

It comes after a year and a half of changes to the Comixology app that were universally derided by owners. In February 2022, Amazon rolled out the 4.0 version of the app, alongside changes to the desktop reading experience that made it largely unusable. There was no option to zoom in on a panel, limited two-page viewing options, and some pages that were intended for a dual-page spread were weirdly zoomed out and impossible to read on any normal monitor.

The available library in some countries like Australia also seemed to shrink, and users across the world reported issues finding, buying, and reading comics across both desktop and mobile apps. Basically, the app that everybody loved got much worse, and now it’s dead altogether.
