With the year coming to an end, the highly anticipated “best of” lists are starting to roll in, and one of the first to kick off the trend is Amazon with its coveted “Best Books of 2021” list.

Curated and compiled by Amazon book editors, this list includes titles that span several categories, from literature to cookbooks. However, in 2021, fiction reigned supreme, “with emerging and established authors telling stories of struggle, daring and redemption,” Amazon explained.

In June 2021, Amazon released a mid-year list, heralding Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead as the best book of the year, up until that point. However, with the official end of the year drawing near, the rankings have changed, with Amor Towles‘ novel The Lincoln Highway grabbing the top spot.

Amazon editors loved the book so much that they even dubbed it “one of the best novels of this decade.”

“Filled with 1950s nostalgia and the gentle naivete and hijinks of those who are young, optimistic and on a mission, The Lincoln Highway follows four kids whose paths collide as they search for their mother and a stashed wad of cash,” Al Woodworth of the Amazon Book Review shared of its plot.

Further described as “the one book the team unanimously agreed on,” Amor Towles’ The Lincoln Highway is the perfect title to uplift those who were pulled down by the hardships of 2021.

“We just couldn’t stop talking about it,” Amazon editors said. “The four main characters’ sense of innocence felt like the hope we needed as we end this year.”

Readers are also big fans of Towles’ work on this best-selling title. In fact, the quote most often highlighted by Amazon Kindle readers is, “For what is kindness but the performance of an act that is both beneficial to another and unrequited?”

Woodworth added that, with this book, Towles delivered “one of the greatest gifts of fiction: hope.”
